Some Research on Obesity

We can start our research on obesity with the definition of obesity.

Obesity is a state of excessive accumulation of fat in the body and it indicates a weight with a body mass index greater than 30 kg/m2.

It is a serious illness.

As a growing majority of the population becomes overweight and obese, the list of obesity health problems is starting to expand.

Obese people are in a very critical group and exposed to many diseases, including:

Why are we fat?

There are numerous factors.

Genetic factors, which influence the metabolism, have a significant influence on appetite. They can also cause weight increase, because they are related to fat distribution, metabolic rate, energy reactions to over-eating, diabetes, etc.

However, when we do some research on obesity, one of the main causes of obesity is usually excessive food intake - we eat more than necessary, or in some cases, we live to eat. At the same time, we spend most of our time sitting down (sitting at work, sitting in front of a computer, sitting in front of the TV, sitting in the car).

According to statistics, insufficient physical activity is the cause of overweight in 83% of men and 95% of women.

A hectic life and a superficial attitude towards food (irregular meals, great quantities of food, little physical activity) contribute to the build up of those excessive kilograms (or pounds) from year to year. Eating habits and an unhealthy lifestyle are definitely the primary causes of being fat.

The availability, all year round, of great amounts of industrial processed food and canned food of all types has greatly contributed to its increase. Of course, we cannot exclude psychological factors, especially among women.

World obesity

During the last decade, the rates in Western countries and developing countries have more than doubled. Today 1.1 billion adults (about 25%) and 10% children are classified as overweight or obese.

People are becoming fatter all over the world.

Am I overweight for my height? What is body mass index (BMI)?

BMI is a popular tool used by physicians to quickly evaluate the optimal weight of an individual.

It is very simple and based on the relative weight and height of a person. The higher the index, the higher the risk of many diseases (such as heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure).

Of course, this is just one of the methods for assessing whether your weight is within the desirable limits and it cannot be applied unambiguously for the entire population. (BMI Formula - BMI = kg/m2).

  • An adult who has a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight.
  • An adult who has a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.

Fast food - Will it make me fat?

If, like many people and nutritionists, you think it will make you fat, you may be right. However, if you are crazy about it and can't live without it, you may need to modify your intake of fast food slightly. Sometimes, because of my very hectic daily schedule, I eat a hamburger or two and it has not made me fat.

Much has been written on this subject. In my opinion, the answer is very simple: NO, as long as you don't eat this kind of food every day.

Crazy about junk food? After trying Mediterranean diet recipes you will never want to eat junk again.

Childhood obesity

The true leading cause of childhood obesity is poor eating.

childhood obesity

When we do some research on obesity in young children, we can say that one of the most critical periods for its development is between ages 5 and 7.

The prevention should begin in childhood (after pre-school age there is an increased creation of fat cells, making it a critical period).

Obesity in teenagers

The key role in prevention is played by their parents, not only because of genetic factors, but also because of family behavior regarding dietary habits and physical activities.

Obesity in adolescents

Adolescence is a risky period because the eating habits and activities change.

Overweight adolescents have lower self-esteem, lower education levels, lower incidence of marriage, lower household income and higher rates of poverty (according to studies of patients who were obese as adolescents).

However, in its treating care should be taken not to cause the opposite effect: serious eating disorders in the form of bulimia or anorexia.

Since about 70% of obese adolescents stay obese also later in life, it is expected that the frequency of adult obesity shall continue to grow.

Research on obesity and the Mediterranean diet

Our research on obesity we can end by saying that the Mediterranean diet significantly reduces the risk of weight gain.

Also, it is the best way to lose weight because at the same time it contains essential nutrients in appropriate amounts.

It can definitely help in its prevention.
