Caffè Centrale Venezia
San Marco 1659/b
Tel. 041 887 6642
Though not quite molecular gastronomy as made famous at Spain’s El Bulli, Caffè Centrale in Venice gives you a taste of the more modern techniques and presentations with their renditions of Venetian classics.
Not a place to come if you’re in a hurry, but to enjoy a leisurely dinner on a special occasion with a loved one.
The atmosphere is quite hip and modern, to go with the food, and the location is superb.
The main entrance is off the Via Piscina Frezzaria, and the private entrance for taxis and gondolas is at the Rio dei Barcaroli.
Prepare to try new things here – perhaps the potato mousse with lagoon shrimp, or gelato of smoked salmon? Not to worry, though, you don’t have to stray so far from your comfort zone if you don’t want to.
The salmon tartare and fresh baccalà (salted cod) are every bit as good as some of their more adventurous choices.
One of their most talked-about dishes is the chateaubriand all’amarone for two, which is a tender cut of steak covered in a succulent red wine reduction.
Try a few sides to go with your meal, like the local burrata mozzarella with wild mushrooms, roast potatoes with crisp vegetables and parmesan fondue, or salad with aromatic herbs.
For something a bit lighter, go with the “snacks,” which include pita bread pizzas with various toppings, club sandwiches, or involtini (rolls) filled with a variety of delicious ingredients from asparagus and egg to baby spinach and Parma ham.
