All’Antico Vinaio

Consistently at the top of the list on Fodors, TripAdvisor, and Yelp, All’Antico Vinaio is a must-visit while in Florence.

It’s a minuscule wine and panini shop, at a short stroll from Piazza della Signoria, and always has a line out the door for their exquisite sandwiches.

Limited seating means that most take their sandwiches outside to eat, though if you’re lucky, you’ll nab a small table inside to enjoy your hard-earned spoils.

The bread is the true revelation, and elevates the sandwiches to a new level; fresh, house-made focaccia comes straight out of the oven and is filled with anything you can imagine and desire. Eggplant, meats, cheeses, vegetables, all accompanied by the most delicious olive oil and sometimes balsamic, these sandwiches are made to order and to perfection.

If you’re feeling bold, let them choose; either way, you’ll end up with an incredible panino.

If you have time, and especially if you have a table, grab a glass of wine from their lovely selection to accompany your lunch.

Since the prices are so reasonable (many students take advantage of its low cost), have two!

The experience of sitting on the cobblestone street, fresh panino and wine in hand, might just be the highlight of your trip.

Customers consistently rave about the charm and generosity of owner Claudio Pieri and the exquisite creations of chef Francesco Pirozzi at this unique, family run restaurant.

The menu has traditional Florentine dishes as well as some even older recreations from the 17th century such as the “delights of Catherine of Medici” and the “fillet in the style of Lorenzo the Magnificent.”

The simple dishes of caprese salad, mixed grilled vegetables, and gnocchi with pecorino cheese are exquisitely prepared, but you should really try some of their more unique dishes like the “grand fantasy of warm seafood” or the pappardelle with wild boar. The tripe alla Fiorentina and lemony veal piccata are also delightful.

The desserts are truly special, made fresh in house daily; the tiramisù might be the best you’ll have while in Italy.

The sommelier will recommend wine after you have made your selections from the menu in order to guarantee the best pairing with your food.
